Alchemy by Katherine Gailer

Geniuine Gold Leaf and Oil Painting on Linen, 2017

This artwork honours motherhood, the beginning of life and reflects on the essential role of women in preserving the environment. A web of interconnection surrounds a mother and her child, while a golden background shines. As alchemy is regarded as a profound symbol of transformation, this artworks represents the alchemical process arising out of women preserving life, and harvesting her seeds.

History of the western world reveals an intentional repression of the feminine viewpoint– leading to a dramatic disconnection to nature and our roots in something larger than ourselves. As primary carriers of the feminine energy in our culture, women embody vital qualities to restore our balance. My work embarks on a journey towards reclaiming the feminine powers, as they exist in the shadows, while resonating with the ever-changing flux of women experience: Explosive, mysterious and interconnected.

Artist: Katherine Gailer

Originally from Colombia and currently working in Australia, Katherine Gailer creates imaginary landscapes exploring women, cultural identity and spaces of magical realism. She graduated with honours from a Bachelor of Fine Arts and completed an Arts Management Masters Degree– both at RMIT University. Her Practice incorporates painting, drawing and Graphic Design.

Gailer’s artistic expression underscores a main theme that looks at the complex relationship between fragility and strength, vulnerability and empowerment. Her artworks can be interpreted as a series of confronting tensions to articulate the essence of the Feminine as a force of relatedness in our world today. Her compositions call upon the wild woman, her connection to the land and honour the empowerment of a new contemporary female identity.

Rediscovering a sense of the sacred and revisiting our ancient past, embody the driving force for the development of her artworks.
