ARTIST BIO

Sue Howard’s work explores the idea that our perception of the world is unique and formed through psychological and physical filters. She is currently interested in exploring how physical filters can create a glimpse or first impression, the moment just before absolute certainty.  In her work  she examines the effect of dirty windows, rain or sun on windscreens, atmospheric conditions and movement. These filters can distort, erase, blur or make ambiguous the way an image is perceived.   While this indistinctnes gives her work an air of abstraction her paintings can also be seen as firmly grounded in reality.

Sue Howard currently lives in and works in Melbourne, in a studio in the Nicholas Building.  She commenced her studies in art in Melbourne at the CAE completing Certificate III.  She then continued her art studies in WA completing Certificate 1V, Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Visual Art at Central Institute of Technology in Perth. In 2014 she completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Fine Art and Art and Design at Curtin University.  She has also competed a number of short courses both in New York and Fremantle and has exhibited in New York and extensively in WA and  Melbourne.  Her works are held in collections throughout Australia and in the U.S.  She has been awarded prizes for her paintings including the Joondalup Community Painting Prize and  the Chelsea International Fine Art Prize.
